“The Save Soil Movement” written by Dale News Environmental Journalist Hayden Walsh
Humanity will face one of the greatest future crises we will ever endure.
The Extinction of Soil.
As the world population rapidly increases, the demands for food naturally increase as well. The high demand for food has influenced unsustainable agricultural practices from around the world that are ripping the soil and planting crops without giving the proper organic minerals back to the dirt to generate healthy soil for food to grow. The soil that has been used to grow an abundance of food to feed the bodies around the world for generations is slowly but surely becoming sand. This is called desertification.
If soil turns to sand, there is no way to grow food. We are facing a future where global food scarcity can become a terrifying reality. According to the United Nations website, “By 2050, global crop yields are estimated to fall by 10%, with some suffering up to a 50% reduction. This will lead to a sharp 30% rise in world food prices, threatening progress on hunger and nutrition, as well as a myriad of associated development goals.” (Bozkir, 2021).
Since our soil is lacking the organic minerals to become healthy topsoil, we are unable to harvest nutrient rich food. The TIME’s article Our Planet is Sending a New Distress Signal, written by spiritual leader and environmental advocate Sadhguru, expresses research from the CDC about the dire depletion of vitamins and nutrients from the food we grow because of agricultural mistreatment. Sadguru writes, “Studies show a tragic depletion in the nutrients worldwide. Americans are potassium-deficient, 88% are deficient in Vitamin E, 67% in Vitamin K, 52% in Magnesium, 43% in Vitamin A, and 39% in Vitamin C, according to a study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).” (Sadguru, 2022).
This is a terrifying wake up call for humanity! We have a responsibility to demand that our soil should be mishandled and should be tended to with the proper care to maintain food for the future generations. We can demand change, and there is a way!
Save Soil is an environmental movement to spread awareness of the possible extinction of topsoil demanding change from our leaders to promote the proper treatment of topsoil. Save Soil can be found on the Conscious Planet website where a great amount of research can be seen, as well as the devastating consequences of topsoil extinction has been inflicted on our planet and affecting human beings.
The website quotes, “In 20 years, 40% less food is expected to be produced for 9.3 billion people. Poor soil leads to poor nutritional value. Today’s fruits and vegetables already contain 90% fewer nutrients. 2 billion people suffer from nutritional deficiencies leading to a multitude of diseases…Agriculture, deforestation, and other factors have degraded and eroded topsoil at alarming rates. Globally, 52% of agricultural land is already degraded. The planet is in crisis. If current rates of soil degradation continue, this would be the end of life as we know it.” (Conscious Planet, 2022).
As their research suggests, agriculture will be near impossible to accomplish if this mistreatment of soil continues. Carbon stored in soil is 3 times that in living plants, and 2 times that in the atmosphere, which means the soil is crucial for carbon sequestration. If the world’s soils are not revitalized, they could release 850 billion tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere contributing to climate change. This is more than all of humanity’s emissions in the last 30 years combined. Mass desertion will happen by 2045 if nothing is done to prevent this in the coming future. Earth will harbor 9.5 billion people along with a food shortage of 40% according to the United Nations. The future of humanity depends on our soil and a grand amount of life depends on healthy soil and will die along with soil’s extinction.
Let’s All Work Together to Save Soil!
We are on the brink of living on a deadly planet devoid of life, food, and unlivable weather conditions. Humanity is careening into a future of hunger and extreme weather. The change will be the catalyst of serious environmental disasters such as extreme weather events such as hurricanes, strong winds, heavy rain, and tidal forces will become a common occurrence in countries around the world.
The disruption and mistreatment of our planet’s soil can be further prevented, and no changes can ensure the worst possible outcome for humans and other life on Earth. By bringing awareness to the rest of the world and demanding change from our leaders, we can make a paradigm shift from a doomed reality to a second chance to maintain a healthy, happy Earth.
