    Ruth Bader Ginsburg

    Written by Kaitlyn Hand

Ruth Bader Ginsburg saved the lives of many women. She may not have been what conservatives want to call “pro life” but in many ways she was. Notorious Ruth Bader Ginsburg deserves a better replacement than Amy Coney Barrett . She deserves someone who is truly pro life to replace her and this is why:

Our country has seen a pandemic that has killed two hundred thousand people. Who has been our president throughout this whole Pandemic? The answer to that question is obvious. Information was leaked that Trump knew how terrible this virus would be and how negatively our country would be impacted. Nonetheless, he sat by and watched people die. The numbers went up every day and more people died but our former president swore to Americans that our country would be back to normal by Easter. Was it pro life to withhold valuable information from the public and watch over two hundred thousand Americans die?

George Floyd was murdered at the end of May by the police and people cried out for reform. Protestors took to the street and pleaded for equality. They stood in front of the white house asking for a leader to make their country a safe place for all people. His response was to tear gas innocent protestors who were the opposite of violent. Trump failed to acknowledge that Black lives mattered. None of our lives matter to him and to think differently is ignorance. Now, he is nominating a judge for a lifelong position that does not believe women should have the right to choose what to do with their own bodies.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg, on the other hand, made it possible for women to get their own credit cards, sign a lease, and to live a life that is not dependent on a man. She fought for female workers to get the same retirement benefits as the men she worked with. She fought for equal pay and did not believe the life of a male was worth more than the life of a female. In order to achieve equality you must allow women to have control over their own bodies, which Barrett does not want to do. She wants to force women to be prodded with hangers and given inadequate medications if they wish to have an abortion.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg wanted to give women the option to live. The fact that our own rights could be taken away scares my fellow SUNY classmate, Emily Nagle. Nagle explained that “If Roe v. Wade gets overturned, I would be worried. I would be worried because people with uteruses wouldn’t have full control over their own bodies anymore. Even if a person became pregnant and wanted an abortion for any reason, it wouldn’t be possible, even if it could save that person’s life”. Ruth Bader Ginsburg understood the importance of allowing women the right to choose and how pregnancy could kill a woman in certain situations. Should a sixteen year old rape victim be forced to carry a baby to full term? Or should a mother of two die to ensure that an unborn child can live, despite killing the mother in the process? Women should be able to decide these things for themselves, not the government.

Being pro life is more than abortion rights. It is whether you see value in the life of a man shot by the police. Whether you see value in a girl being as educated as a boy. Whether or not you condemn men for rape instead of asking what they were wearing. Ruth Bader Ginsburg deserves someone to take her seat who values equality as much as she did.

She taught us that to truly be pro life you must support equality. You must be pro choice so women can have a chance to make their own decisions. You must support equal pay and make sure everyone has a voice. Her loss is more troubling as ever as our nation struggles with such division. Let’s never forget what The Notorious Ruth Bader Ginsburg fought for.
