Will Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker Surpass the Level of Heath Ledger?
September 23, 2019 – Jerome Edell
Joaquin Phoenix as Joker
In 2008, Heath Ledger received the Academy Award for best actor in a supporting role for his defining take on the Batman super-villain, The Joker, in 2008’s “The Dark Knight.” Unfortunately, Ledger passed away that year in January due to an accidental intoxication from prescription drugs. His role as The Joker was one of the most amazing performances in cinema history. Not a single actor in over a decade has come close to the same performance as Ledger when portraying The Joker. With that said, Ledger’s close friend and fantastic actor, Joaquin Phoenix, will be portraying his own rendition of the Joker in DC Films’ “Joker” when it hits the big screens on October 4th, 2019. For the first time in a decade we could finally see an actor come close or maybe even beat the same performance by Heath Ledger. Joaquin has prepared for this film emotionally and physically by forcing himself to lose weight, purposely abusing his own body, or even running around New York City in a clown outfit. He had the dedication for this role and it will either make or break his acting career and he knows that. It’s a very exciting time for comic book fans because the trailers for “Joker” have gotten nothing but love and support from the fans, and the movie is being praised at multiple film festivals from critics. During the Venice Film Festival the film received an 8-minute standing ovation for Joaquin’s portrayal of the Joker. Joaquin Phoenix said to the media that this is his own rendition of Joker, and in no way could he ever live up to Ledger’s portrayal. Fans will find out on October 4th when “ Joker “ hits theaters.
