The Discourse Club is a huge vision for Farmingdale to bring conversation to the table! Too many times we rely on our social media to speak about social and political stances or certain issues that are challenging our society as a whole, but we wanted to bring those conversations to reality. We created The Discourse Club because we want to create an environment that no matter the issue we can have a respectful and civilized conversation, hence the name “discourse”. We believe that understanding another person’s perspective or an issue is vital to reaching common ground in our culture on vital discussions like, gun rights, abortion, climate change, mental health, and even immigration. But we can’t reach common ground or understanding without clearly and efficiently listening to the opposition first.
When we started this club we didn’t want it to be a debate club, that’s not what it is. The Discourse Club’s vision is simple. Learn different ideas of your fellow students, understand their point of view and reach common ground. To never shut down any ideas, but to try to comprehend them and see how we can try to solve an issue peacefully. Controversial subjects usually get negative feedback, but that doesn’t mean we have to avoid them. On the contrary, we have to face them and have civility. If you are interested then join us for our Interest Meeting on February 18th, from 11:00am-12:00pm at Lupton Hall in Room T101. We can’t wait to see you there!
