Creating a Résumé

page1-463px-Resume.pdfIn preparing for employment one of the most important pieces of the puzzle is the résumé.

The résumé and cover letter should be customized for the position and organization for which you seek employment.

While much of this is done on your own after doing research into the organization and position, a great first step is a stock résumé.

The student success center specializes in résumés. The process involves making an appointment and providing them with your past employment experiences and education as well as your activities and any related projects. This is a brief of who you are and your interests and accomplishments. Think of it as a menu description at a restaurant. You want to provide a list of what you have to order and the cover letter is the description marketing why should order the dish. The interview is the sample cheese on a toothpick before committing to buy.

Once your base résumé is set up, you add/remove items customizing it to the specifications of the position for which you are applying.
Your résumé is also important to maintain for awards for which you may apply it should be spruced up every 6 months or less.
