Advisors for me, are some of the most influential people. They have so much knowledge and past experience that they want to share with students. When you meet with your counselor, here are a few questions that’s I suggest asking them to ensure that you are getting the most out of your time meeting with them.
1. Ask them about where they went to school and what their major was. – You will be able to get some insight and personal experience. You may even find that you have the same major, and they could share some of their personal experience which could help you!
2. Ask them about their experience – Often times we settle with the courses we need, when advisors could have experienced something else. They have a different perspective on courses and could advise you in the right direction and major focus.
3. Research your classes! – This is critical! I believe that students should come prepared with some sort of knowledge and idea about what courses they think they should take. Advisors shouldn’t have to do all the work, students should have an understanding about what they need, and an idea of courses they think is fit for them. With your research, you and your advisor can devise the best schedule for yourself because they could have recommendations for courses they think would best suit you.
4. Pick their brain – Asking advisors about certain courses and professors could give you a huge advantage and insight into each course. They also have lots of information accessible to them, that they want to share with students. Don’t be shy to ask them questions, that’s what they are there for!
Advisors help keep you on track and up to date with the courses you need to take. They are there to help students! Students should take full advantage of their services and recommendations. Be honest and open with them, they will help you as much as possible. I can say from experience, they have helped me!
