Life as a Transfer Student
More than 33% of students transfer to a different school each year; I am one of them. I am a transfer student from Nassau Community College. I graduated May 2016 and transferred to Farmingdale, this is my first semester here. I have had such a great experience thus far at Farmingdale. I do not regret my decision to transfer here one bit.
Transferring to a different school may sound like something that may be hard or may be a lot of work, but it is not. When I first started looking at schools I was dreading the process of having to transfer my credits, making new friends and getting to know a new campus. When I looked into Farmingdale I found that transferring wouldn’t be so tough. Farmingdale, not like many schools, as a separate department called transfer services. When I first started applying, I decided to make an appointment with one of the transfer counselors. I met with Judi Cestaro, Director of Transfer Services, we discussed everything from transferring credits to student life on campus. She was very personable and welcoming. Meeting someone so friendly made me want to transfer to Farmingdale.
Once I was finally accepted into Farmingdale, I thought it was going to be a hard process to get all the necessary things to attend classes; but I was wrong. I sent my transcript over and my credits were evaluated and I did not lose one credit. I met with an advisor from the School of Business to make my schedule; I got into all the classes I wanted for the semester and they were all at the times that I wanted to attend classes. After making my schedule, all I had to worry about was attending the first day of classes.
On the first day of school, walking to my first class was so nerve wracking. I was so nervous that I was going to be late to class or that I wouldn’t be able to find my way. But by the fourth or fifth day I was use to the school and my surroundings but I was nervous because I didn’t make any friends yet. I was scared that I may not make any friends considering nobody really talked to me and almost everyone in my classes had already met or knew someone in the class. Until one day, I was paired up for a group project and met my really good friend Vinnie. While working on the group project I learned he was also a transfer student looking to make a friend and who was in the same year and program as me. We now always spend common hour together, have another class together and we also talk outside of class.
I would absolutely recommend Farmingdale to anyone looking to transfer to another school. Farmingdale offers great programs, they help you and will guide you along the way. There are so many people here willing to help you. Many people transfer to Farmingdale every year; making friends is not an issue here. I do not regret my decision, I am so happy I transferred to Farmingdale.
