Dr. Eleanor Fapohunda Colloquium Series Is Back
The annual Dr. Eleanor Fapohunda Colloquium Series kicks off the fall semester with a presentation by Dr. Katelynn DeLuca, assistant professor of English.
Her subject: “Norman Rockwell Visits an Absent Present School: Attending to Class Codes in the Classroom.” Dr. DeLuca describes her lecture this way: “In what ways are our pedagogical practices truly inclusive of students as members of diverse communities, cultures, classes, and spaces? The absent present refers to that which is embodied by students (present) but unacknowledged (absent) within the classroom. This pedagogical approach is dedicated to engaging figurative spaces that foster agency for students and instructors as they embody and articulate multiple critical identities. Student identities are often ignored through various avenues, including syllabi, modeled language, instructor feedback, and assignment and assessment structures. Adopting this pedagogical approach may enable faculty to create more inclusive spaces, which becomes particularly visible through the lens of socioeconomic and sociocultural class.”
