Fraternity, Sorority Raise Big Bucks for Breast Cancer Research

Together they raised more than $5,000 to raise awareness about breast cancer.

“They” are the men and women of Tau Kappa Epsilon and Sigma Delta Tau, a fraternity and sorority on the FSC campus.

The money came from two sources: the “Bros and Bras” event sponsored by TKE, and joint participation in a “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” walk at Jones Beach last month.

“Bros and Bras” – which features frat members collecting donations on campus – has been sponsored by TKE for the last three years. Two years ago, the event raised $1,200, and last year $950. This year they set a new record: $3,500.

“This is a huge event for us during the year,” said TKE president Rodolfo Chacon. “We sometimes have teachers donate $100 – $200. It’s really amazing how helpful people can be, and shows how much heart and generosity people on campus have.

“Most of us have been affected by breast cancer in some way. For example, my mom is a survivor and my aunt is currently battling breast cancer, so raising $3,500 really puts a smile on my face.”

At “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer,” TKE was joined by SDT, which raised $1,507 toward the cause.

“Sigma Delta Tau stands for empowering women, so to have contributed and helped raised money for such a deserving cause means so much to us,” said Lizzy Rosen, SDT president. “Being able to raise this money with TKE only inspires us to raise more in the future, and continue to raise money for such deserving causes like Making Strides. Same as TKE, a lot of our women have been affected by breast cancer in some way.”

The grand total raised by the two events was $5,007, which put FSC’s contribution to the cause in the Top 60 in the nation.
