“Sustainability” is the Word at Aramark Food Services
October 29, 2018
No doubt you’ve seen the new recycle bins around campus – for trash, paper, and cans/bottles. Now Aramark, FSC’s food-service provider, is pitching in with its own sustainability initiative, called “Green Thread.” Elements of the project include:
- Tray-less dining at Pop’s. This eliminates the need to wash trays, saving hundreds of gallons of water and reducing the use of cleaning solution.
- Local and sustainable purchasing. Food is sourced food from many local farmers, growers and distributors.
- Animal welfare. An animal-welfare policy improves the treatment of animals for egg, meat and dairy products, through engagement with suppliers, academia, NGOs and others.
- Food-waste management. The goal is to reduce waste from all points in the food production and service timeline. All aspects of sourcing, storing, producing and serving food at FSC are rigorously planned and developed to minimize food waste.
- Elimination of single-use plastic. Aramark will significantly reduce single-use plastic by 2022. The initiative has already begun with a focus on plastic straws and stirrers, which will be available only by request by Spring 2019.
- Fryer-oil recycling. One hundred percent of used fryer oil is recycled.
- Reduced printing. Many printed materials have reduced or eliminated.
- Recycled-content paper. One hundred percent recycled content office and copy paper is used at campus locations.
- Energy and water conservation. Employees are trained each semester on common energy and water conservation practices.
