Molly Crabapple: The News is in the Art
January 2, 2018
February 9 – April 9 Memorial Gallery, Hale Hall
In response to current events, artist/writer Molly Crabapple will be featured at “Scribing Reality: A survey of reportage works by Molly Crabapple.”
Each topic is communicated through her art and becomes a tour of current events. Image after image, the viewer is engulfed by scenes of war, crisis, politics and natural disasters. Her varied topics include time in Iraq and Syria, a societal response to the U.S. presidential campaign and election, the refugee crisis, and her visit to Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria.
The show is curated by Memorial Gallery director Beth Giacummo.
Crabapple lives in New York. Brothers of the Gun, her illustrated collaboration with Syrian war journalist Marwan Hisham, will be published by Random House later this year.
A lecture by the artist will take place Tuesday, 2/13, 11 a.m. – noon, in Gleeson Hall 104. Later that day, from 5 – 7 p.m. in Hale Hall, there will be a reception and book signing. Gallery hours are Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Admission is free, and the gallery is accessible to persons with mobility impairments. For more information, call 631-420-2181.
