FSC First SUNY LI Campus to Partner with United Nations – Updated

Farmingdale has just been certified as the first SUNY campus on LI to become a member of the prestigious United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) program – a worldwide initiative in which academic and research institutions work with the UN to promote global priorities such as peace, human rights, and sustainable development.

Dr. Robert A. Saunders, director of international education and programs, and professor in the History, Politics and Geography department will head up the program, with contributions from Dr. Kamal Shahrabi, Dr. Melixa Abad Izquierdo, Dr. Angela Jones, and Dr. Michaela Porubanova as detailed below.UN(1)

  • Dr. Miriam K. Deitsch, Distinguished Teaching Professor, Sociology and Anthropology – Focal Point: Tolerance/dialogue/issues of poverty
  • Dr. Kamal Shahrabi, Dean, School of Engineering Technology – Focal Point: Sustainability
  • Dr. Melixa Abad Izquierdo, Faculty Advisor, Model UN, Assistant Professor, History, Politics & Geography – Focal Point: Global citizenship
  • Dr. Angela Jones, Coordinator, Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Minor, Assistant Professor of Sociology – Focal Point: Diversity/freedom of inquiry, opinion, and speech
  • Dr. Michaela Porubanova, Assistant Professor of Psychology Focal Point: Capacity building

UNAI was established in 2010 by UN Secretary-General Ban-ki Moon, with the purpose of aligning academic institutions with the UN’s mandate through activities and research in a shared culture of intellectual social responsibility.
