Strong United Nations. Better World.

United Nations Day
UN at 70: Strong UN. Better World

To celebrate United Nations Day last month, FSC wanted to do something that would make Farmingdale State College students feel engaged and involved with the United Nations and the UNA Campus Chapter. To accomplish their purpose, they decided to partner with the Office of International Education to reach more students, and the Theta Kappa Alpha sorority from outside to bring students from the Elmont High School. Our event consisted of a tribute to the life and work of Dr. Ralph Bunche, who was a leading American statesman, scholar, and Nobel laureate involved in the UN formation and administration. The tribute was also made to him because Farmingdale State College recently added a water fountain to the Ralph Bunche plaza.

In the second part of the event, an Inter-Generational Model United Nations (IGMUN) was offered. Students from Farmingdale and Elmont High School demonstrated their abilities to diplomatically solve global issues, and experience a real debate. The topic for the simulation was “Coping with the World Water Crisis and Related Challenges.”

Among the special attendees were Dr. Hubert Keen, president of Farmingdale State College; Ms. Kiona P. DeWitt, president of the Theta Iota Omega Chapter; Mrs. Tanisha Tingle, former U.S. Delegate to the U.S. Mission to the United Nations; Dr. Patricia Hill Williams, chair of FSC’s College Council, and Ms. Emma Pioche Williams, Sr. Conference Officer, Division of General Assembly and Conference Manager, United Nations.
