This eclectic album left both fans and critics wanting more. Although the album only has 10 songs lasting 40 minutes, it sure does pack a punch. This album takes on a totally different vibe to it than all of One Direction’s pop albums. Harry Styles has a rock/alternative foundation to it with a hint of pop.

The hit single “Sign of the Times” hit Platinum Certified 13 times in 8 different regions. The single was a soulful ballad that anyone could enjoy. The rest of the album had a mixture of upbeat and slow songs. “Kiwi”, the third single, is a rock anthem that can light up any room. This song was not expected by the singer since is it a complete 180 from the previous music he has created. With lyrics such as, “She worked her way through a cheap pack of cigarettes / Hard liquor mixed with a bit of intellect / and all the boys, they were saying they were into it” the audience got a more adult view of Harry Styles. Another song off the album, “From the Dining Table”, is one of the slower songs off the album. It showcases an inside scoop into Harry’s vulnerable side. It is about heartbreak and how someone feels when the relationship is over. Some lyrics include, “We haven’t spoke since you went away / Comfortable silence is so overrated / Why won’t you ever be the first one to break? / Even the phone misses your call, by the way”.

Not only are the lyrics enjoyable, but the beats behind them are too. The song “Carolina” has noises that sounds like ducks but in an odd way, it’s very enjoyable and makes the song unforgettable. “Ever Since New York”, combines sad lyrics with an upbeat tone. Overall, this album is enjoyable for anyone, from little children to grandparents. With lyrics that envision a surplus of different emotions, beats that are catchy and meaningful, and unexpected turn from the once pop star, I believe that Harry Styles deserves 5 stars.

Harry Styles debut album, Harry Styles. was released on May 12, 2017.
