One of the most devoted, inspiring, and ambitious people on this campus, I\u2019m referring to Professor Agata Boxe!\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Beyond<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">her<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">lecturer<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">position<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #000000\">Boxe<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">wears<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">many<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">hats<\/span>. <span style=\"color: #000000\">She\u2019s<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">a<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">jack<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">of<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">all<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">trades<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #000000\">if<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">you<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">will<\/span>. <span style=\"color: #000000\">Boxe\u2019s<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">dive<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">into<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">the<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">world<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">of<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">writing<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">occurred<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">when<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">she<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">was<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">just<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">a<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">little<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">girl<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">who<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">discovered<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">her<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">passion<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">for<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">reading<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">and<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">writing<\/span>.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0\u201c<span style=\"color: #000000\">As<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">a<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">kid<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #000000\">I<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">was<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">an<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">introverted<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">loner<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">who<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">would<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">spend<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">her<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">days<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">reading<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">books<\/span> \u2014 <span style=\"color: #000000\">often<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">several<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">at<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">once<\/span>\u201d, <span style=\"color: #000000\">is<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">what<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">Boxe<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">describes<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">as<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">she<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">reflects<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">on<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">her<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">early<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">days<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">of<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">writing<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;color: #000000\">The first forms of writing she dabbled in were poetry and short stories. Her love for writing only grew as she entered adolescence. This sentiment continued far into college, as Boxe studied for her undergrad, she knew deep down all she wanted to do was write. That saying \u201cdo what you love, and you\u2019ll never work a day in your life\u201d, couldn\u2019t resonate more with Boxe.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">She knew that she wanted writing to be a major aspect in her professional career, so that\u2019s when she decided to apply to the Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY. As a student there, Boxe published an article with the campus\u2019 student news service. That sole article she submitted, held much more value than she could have ever imagined.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;color: #000000\">\u201cI published an article with our student news service. It was a wonderful opportunity to get my first clip, which became the foundation of my freelance writing career. Once I started pitching magazine editors, I was able to use that clip as an example of my published writing.\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;color: #000000\">Post-graduation, Boxe noted that acquiring her first writing job wasn\u2019t too much of a hassle.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u201cI was very fortunate that CUNY\u2019s Newmark Graduate School of Journalism had provided me with a stipend to complete a summer internship at Psychology Today.\u201d <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Immediately<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">after<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">graduating<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #000000\">Boxe<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">received<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">an<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">offer<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">for<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">a<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">paid<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">internship<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">at<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">a<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">science<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">news<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">website<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">titled<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">Live<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">Science<\/span>. <span style=\"color: #000000\">After<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">working<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">there<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">for<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">several<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">months<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #000000\">Boxe<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">finally<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">landed<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">her<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">first<\/span> \u201c<span style=\"color: #000000\">real<\/span>\u201d <span style=\"color: #000000\">journalism<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">job<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">at<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">the<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">health<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">desk<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">of<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">CBSNews.com.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">The<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">editors<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">there<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">were<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">extremely<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">impressed<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">with<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">her<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">internship<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">work<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #000000\">which<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">resulted<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">in<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">her<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">joining<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">the<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">CBS<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">News<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">staff<\/span>!\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c<span style=\"color: #000000\">The<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">editors<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">hired<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">me<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">because<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">of<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">my<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">internship<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">experience<\/span>. <span style=\"color: #000000\">The<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">conclusion<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">here<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">is<\/span>: <span style=\"color: #000000\">internships<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #000000\">internships<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #000000\">internships<\/span>! <span style=\"color: #000000\">Do<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">as<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">many<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">as<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">you<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">can<\/span>.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">While Boxe did enjoy working as a freelance writer, she does emphasize it is becoming more and more difficult to execute. However, she mentions a key difference among freelance writing vs a full-time writing position is that freelance writers have more leeway regarding the topics they cover. Freelance writers also reap the benefits of selecting the publications they yearn to write for. Boxe also believes she can be much more thorough in her reporting as a freelance writer.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;color: #000000\">Now you may be wondering, how did Professor Boxe wind up in academia? Well in 2016, Boxe worked as a freelance writer, and decided out of the blue to apply for a part-time position as an adjunct lecturer at a college in the Bronx. Boxe secured the job, and it didn\u2019t take long for her to enjoy teaching college students, and collaborating with other faculty members. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Funny enough, her father originally wanted her to work in academia, and after her own journey through freelance, that\u2019s exactly where she<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">ended up.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;color: #000000\">\u201cI realize I often end up doing what my parents would have liked me to, not necessarily in a conscious way. I just put my own spin on it.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;color: #000000\">Once she completed her first academic year, she was promoted to a temporary substitute lecturer position that lasted a full school year. However, this position required teaching five classes per semester. While being a substitute lecturer, Boxe proceeded to apply for a permanent full-time position at the same college; though things would hit a wall when Boxe wasn\u2019t scheduled for an interview.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0Despite the initial negative outcome, Boxe still managed to see the positive in the scenario, \u201cIt was a very humbling experience that provided me with an invaluable opportunity to become more resilient.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;color: #000000\">\u00a0Boxe returned to adjunct lecturing once her one year as a substitute lecturer concluded. Playing the waiting game, Boxe kept applying for faculty positions at other institutions. Well as they say, all roads lead to Farmingdale! Boxe would go on to obtain her current position here at FSC as a full-time lecturer.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">At this point,<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">Boxe<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">had two entirely different<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">career<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">paths<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">under<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">her<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">belt; freelance<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">writing<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #000000\">and lecturing. When comparing<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">the<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">two<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #000000\">she<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">shares they both involve<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">an<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">adequate amount<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">of<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">writing.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">This<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">is what Boxe has to say pertaining<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">to<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">the<\/span> <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">differences<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> <span style=\"color: #000000\">among the two,<\/span> \u201cI <span style=\"color: #000000\">am<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">a<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">very different<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">person<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">in<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">my job as<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">a<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">journalist versus<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">a<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">lecturer.<\/span> I <span style=\"color: #000000\">would<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">say<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">that<\/span> I <span style=\"color: #000000\">am probably much more diplomatic in my lecturer role. At Farmingdale,<\/span> I <span style=\"color: #000000\">have also learned<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">to<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">be<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">more administrative when necessary.\u201d<\/span> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Boxe also mentions the advantages and disadvantages<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">both<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">careers carry. For freelance writing, she liked to interview interesting people, learn, and enjoyed writing about topics of interest. The pitfalls of freelance writing she states are lack<\/span> of <span style=\"color: #000000\">stability, lots<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">of<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">rejection, and the occurrence of writer&#8217;s block.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">As a lecturer, Boxe appreciates being a part of a beneficial union called UUP, she cherishes the company of her supportive, and mentor-like colleagues (shoutout to Dr. Vicki Janik, and Dr. Noel Holton-Brathwaite), the impactful and everlasting change she can make in students lives, especially through her advisory role. She accredits Dr. Charles Adair for teaching her the ins and outs of operating Degreeworks. Boxe also admires the genuinity of the students, and the exciting impromptuness of the PCM Department! Like any job, being a lecturer does have its flaws. Boxe emphasized having a heavy workload is one of them; teaching five classes at a time, advising, supervising interns, attending recruitment events, and managing the department&#8217;s Instagram is a lot for one to have on their plate. Of course we are all aware of the fact Degreeworks is a hassle within itself as well. Working as a fairly new, untenured faculty member can also be a bit strenuous too.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Were you aware the PCM Department has an Instagram account?! Did you know Professor Boxe runs it alongside the social media interns? Indeed she does! The Instagram account has been doing so well, Boxe and her team of interns have received numerous compliments on their spectacular work! Despite being bogged down by other responsibilities, Boxe is still determined to keep the account active, as it is a part of the PCM brand now. The interns typically create content for the account, while Boxe edits their content and manages the entirety of the account. Boxe states people work best when not micromanaged, so she gives the interns a lot of fluidity with their content so their creative juices can flow. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;color: #000000\">Boxe and the team utilize Canva for their account, and like most social media managers, they love it! \u201cIt is extremely user friendly.\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Dale<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">News<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">peeps<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #000000\">listen<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">up<\/span>. <span style=\"color: #000000\">The<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">advice<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">Boxe<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">has<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">to<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">give<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">for<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">students<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">working<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">on<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">a<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">student<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">publication<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">is<\/span> \u201c<span style=\"color: #000000\">Establish<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">a<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">clear<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">editorial<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">process<\/span>. <span style=\"color: #000000\">Every<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">writer<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">needs<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">an<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">editor<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #000000\">whether<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">it <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">is<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">faculty<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #000000\">or<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">another<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">student<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">reviewing<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">their<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">work<\/span>. <span style=\"color: #000000\">Learn<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">from<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">constructive <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">criticism<\/span>. <span style=\"color: #000000\">Your<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">editor<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">works<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">hard<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">to<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">help<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">you<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">improve<\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;color: #000000\">Here is some career advice you can take away from the professional herself! If you want to go down the social media management or freelance writing route, Boxe suggests to keep getting those internships.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u201cFocus on building a skill set rather than getting all As. Grades don\u2019t mean much on the job market. The fact that you have a college degree, relevant work experience, and skills matters much more than your<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">GPA. My last piece of advice for these two positions would be to take classes that will teach you the marketable skills you need. And, of course, take as <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;color: #000000\">as many writing courses as you can. ChatGPT is great, but it is not a person. Human experience that shines through a piece of writing cannot be replicated.\u201d Well said, Professor Boxe.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;color: #000000\">For those of you who are interested in freelance writing, \u201cThis career path is not for the faint of heart. You need to become mentally and physically strong. For me, working out regularly has helped a lot with that. Other tips for the lecturer role: Learn to not take things personally. Realize that you can only control your own behavior. There is nothing you can do about other people\u2019s actions. Finally, building a supportive network of people who will help you without you having to ask them to is incredibly important.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Thank you Professor Boxe for your words of wisdom, and taking the time to interview with us!
