“Every Man for Himself”<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

Mauna Loa raged with all her might,\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

like a fierce thunderstorm, she was coming to fight.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

The island erupted in mayhem,\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

brother and I clenched Mother like a flock o\u2019 birds to their wire.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

 <\/p>\n

Hilo was burdened with ash;\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

A black blizzard swept through, tarnishing everything in its path.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

Soot-ridden street lights swung like dying church candles,\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

as the island\u2019s prayers went unanswered.<\/span><\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

 <\/p>\n

Tick tock… Tick tock<\/em><\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

 <\/p>\n

Lava slunk through the village like Eden\u2019s serpent,\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

each second a step closer to the ruination of Hilo.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

Dissonant sirens sang in the distance,\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

but the Hilo Fire Company was nowhere to be found.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

 <\/p>\n

Every man for himself, just as Father once said.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

And Father was right, because where was Father now?<\/span><\/h4>\n
