{"id":2922,"date":"2016-04-04T10:42:18","date_gmt":"2016-04-04T14:42:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.farmingdale.edu\/sites\/rambassadors\/?p=2922"},"modified":"2016-04-04T10:42:18","modified_gmt":"2016-04-04T14:42:18","slug":"interesting-electives-at-farmingdale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.farmingdale.edu\/sites\/rambassadors\/2016\/04\/interesting-electives-at-farmingdale\/","title":{"rendered":"Interesting Electives at Farmingdale"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are plenty of great courses offered at Farmingdale.\u00a0 Many of the courses you&#8217;ll take are needed to satisfy requirements for your major but some of your credits will come from elective courses.\u00a0 These courses can be a lot of fun because you have a variety of different subjects to choose from.\u00a0 Also, the workload is not always as demanding as your major courses.<\/p>\n<p>There are so many options.\u00a0 Farmingdale offers a few courses that you maybe wouldn\u2019t expect, such as Anthropology, Horticulture, and Music.\u00a0 There are over 50 different departments!\u00a0 There\u2019s something for everybody.\u00a0 The most important advice I could give to anyone when it comes making your schedule is to register for classes as soon as possible. The school will mail you a notice telling you what date registration will open for you.\u00a0 If you wait too long, many of the classes that you hoped to take can be full.\u00a0 Register early!<\/p>\n<p>In my first semester, I needed to satisfy a liberal arts requirement.\u00a0 As we all know, classes that you don\u2019t like can be boring, so I wanted to choose something that interests me.\u00a0 I had never learned much about Anthropology in all my years of schooling so I decided that I would take Intro to Anthropology (ANT 100).\u00a0 It was well worth it.\u00a0 I learned about a whole bunch of different cultures.\u00a0 As our final assignment, we all had to do field work which means immersing yourself into an unfamiliar culture.\u00a0 I went to a Native American feast!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.farmingdale.edu\/sites\/rambassadors\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/04\/IMG_0734.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2923\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2923\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.farmingdale.edu\/sites\/rambassadors\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/04\/IMG_0734-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0734\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.farmingdale.edu\/sites\/rambassadors\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/04\/IMG_0734-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blogs.farmingdale.edu\/sites\/rambassadors\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/04\/IMG_0734.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This semester was more flexible in terms of my schedule.\u00a0 I was able to sign up for more classes that I really wanted to take, and the times that I went to class were way better for me.\u00a0 For example, I needed to take an art class and I didn\u2019t like most of the options that were available to me.\u00a0 Then it appeared; Intro to Calligraphy (VIS 104).\u00a0 I am very pleased with this course.\u00a0 I always knew what calligraphy was but I never had the chance to actually try it out myself.\u00a0 It is by far one of the most relaxing classes I have ever taken.\u00a0 It is a fun way to express yourself.\u00a0 So far, we have gone over a few different hands (fonts) and finished our first project, which was a quote.\u00a0 I\u2019ve had good times and I\u2019ve made new friends.\u00a0 No textbook required!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.farmingdale.edu\/sites\/rambassadors\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/04\/Screen-Shot-2016-03-20-at-4.13.15-PM.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2924\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2924\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.farmingdale.edu\/sites\/rambassadors\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/04\/Screen-Shot-2016-03-20-at-4.13.15-PM-300x124.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2016-03-20 at 4.13.15 PM\" width=\"300\" height=\"124\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.farmingdale.edu\/sites\/rambassadors\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/04\/Screen-Shot-2016-03-20-at-4.13.15-PM-300x124.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.farmingdale.edu\/sites\/rambassadors\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/04\/Screen-Shot-2016-03-20-at-4.13.15-PM-1024x424.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.farmingdale.edu\/sites\/rambassadors\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/04\/Screen-Shot-2016-03-20-at-4.13.15-PM.png 1916w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another great class that I\u2019m currently taking is called Principles of Nutrition (BIO 125).\u00a0 It counts as a liberal arts\/science elective and I recommend it to anybody who would like to learn more about a healthy diet\/lifestyle.\u00a0 Nutrition is the science of food.\u00a0 This class will teach you positive habits such as living a lifestyle of moderation, variety, and balance.\u00a0 You will learn all about Protein, Carbs, Fats, Vitamins, and their functions.\u00a0 This class will make you think about what you eat and why.\u00a0 According to my professor, this class caused many students to pursue becoming registered dietitians!\u00a0 I have a great professor.\u00a0 His name is Dr. Poplarski.\u00a0 He has a bunch of real life experience and amazing new stories to tell us every class that he uses to explain certain concepts. It is never boring.\u00a0 There are only 4 multiple choice tests and as long as you come prepared to class every time, you will do very well.\u00a0 I have learned a lot more about what it means to be healthy, and I am glad that I had the opportunity to take a practical class that I can apply to my life.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.farmingdale.edu\/sites\/rambassadors\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/04\/51DYCMAmqhL._SX412_BO1204203200_.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2925\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2925\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.farmingdale.edu\/sites\/rambassadors\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/04\/51DYCMAmqhL._SX412_BO1204203200_-248x300.jpg\" alt=\"51DYCMAmqhL._SX412_BO1,204,203,200_\" width=\"248\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.farmingdale.edu\/sites\/rambassadors\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/04\/51DYCMAmqhL._SX412_BO1204203200_-248x300.jpg 248w, https:\/\/blogs.farmingdale.edu\/sites\/rambassadors\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/04\/51DYCMAmqhL._SX412_BO1204203200_.jpg 414w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 248px) 100vw, 248px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One last class I will discuss is Ethics (PHI 205).\u00a0 It is a philosophy class.\u00a0 I like this class because although there are tests and quizzes, it isn\u2019t really about how much knowledge you can retain.\u00a0 It is more of a discussion based class. \u00a0 Most professors lecture to you as you take notes, just so you can be ready for the test.\u00a0 This class is different because he asks questions, and he wants to hear your opinion.\u00a0 Every single student is allowed to express their opinions freely and I think it is a nice class for anybody because we have all been in a situation wondering what would be the right thing to do.\u00a0 That is what ethics is all about;
