{"id":28400,"date":"2020-01-27T14:58:58","date_gmt":"2020-01-27T19:58:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.farmingdale.edu\/sites\/campus-times\/?p=28400"},"modified":"2020-01-28T12:59:22","modified_gmt":"2020-01-28T17:59:22","slug":"fsc-lauded-for-promoting-healthy-campus-through-planting-trees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.farmingdale.edu\/sites\/campus-times\/2020\/01\/27\/fsc-lauded-for-promoting-healthy-campus-through-planting-trees\/","title":{"rendered":"FSC Lauded for Promoting Healthy Campus Through Planting Trees"},"content":{"rendered":"<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>Farmingdale State College has been honored for its commitment to effective urban forest management, with the 2019 Tree Campus USA\u00ae award, sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Tree Campuses and their students set examples for not only their student bodies, but the surrounding communities, showcasing how trees create a healthier environment,\u201d says Dan Lambe, president of the Arbor Day Foundation. \u201cBecause of Farmingdale State College&#8217;s participation, air will be purer, water cleaner, and your students and faculty will be surrounded by the shade and beauty the trees provide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>President Nader says, \u201cAchieving this honor validates many years of dedicated environmental stewardship of our campus. \u00a0I appreciate the work of our Sustainability Committee and Tree Advisory Committee for their diligent work. Since the College\u2019s founding in 1912, Farmingdale has been a leader in recognizing and promoting the importance of trees and plants in cleaning our air, protecting our water, and sustaining natural beauty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Tree Campus USA program honors colleges and universities for effective campus forest management, and for engaging staff and students in conservation goals. FSC achieved the title by meeting Tree Campus USA\u2019s five standards, which include maintaining a tree advisory committee, campus tree-care plan, dedicated annual expenditures for its campus tree program, an Arbor Day observance, and student service-learning projects. There are 385 campuses across the country with this recognition.<\/p>\n<p>The Arbor Day Foundation has helped campuses throughout the country plant thousands of trees, and Tree Campus USA colleges and universities invested more than $51 million in campus forest-management last year. This work supports the Arbor Day Foundation\u2019s <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/adestra.arborday.org\/c\/1WivT7OCk9fVkwtuqa5DwKJ\">Time for Trees<\/a> <\/strong>initiative \u2014 an unprecedented effort to plant 100 million trees in forests and communities, and inspire five million tree planters, by 2022. Last year, Tree Campus USA schools collectively planted 34,515 trees and engaged 33,432 tree planters.
