LIATI?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For 34 years &#8211; from the time FSC opened in 1912<br \/>\nas the <em>New York State School of Agriculture<\/em>, <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-16574 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.farmingdale.edu\/sites\/campus-times\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/03\/LIATI-sign-mounted.-300x172.jpg\" alt=\"LIATI sign mounted.\" width=\"300\" height=\"172\" \/>until it changed both academic emphasis and its name in 1946, to <em>Long Island Agricultural and Technical Institute<\/em> &#8211; \u00a0cows roamed the campus and crops covered the ground.<\/p>\n<p>Actually, FSC had three names during those 34 years &#8211; all with agriculture in the title:\u00a0<em>State Institute of Applied Agriculture on Long Island; State Institute of Applied Agriculture; <\/em>and <em>State Institute of Agriculture.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But in 1946 &#8211; though its agricultural programs remained intact &#8211; programs such as building construction, aircraft maintenance and operation, industrial chemistry, technical dental service, and advertising art and design were included\u00a0 in the college catalog. Read <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-16580 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.farmingdale.edu\/sites\/campus-times\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/03\/LIATI-Original-Sign-Photograph-002-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"LIATI Original Sign Photograph (002)\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>the announcement in the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.farmingdale.edu\/sites\/campus-times\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/03\/Brooklyn-Daily-Eagle1946.pdf\"><strong>Brooklyn Daily Eagle, 1946<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But the die was cast, and though agricultural studies were offered at the College until the mid-1980s, it was in 1987 that the transition from agriculture to technology &#8211; except for FSC&#8217;s exceptional horticulture program &#8211; was complete.<\/p>\n<p>Now &#8211; on the occasion of the College&#8217;s<br \/>\n106th anniversary &#8211; FSC is honoring the<br \/>\nground-<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-16575 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.farmingdale.edu\/sites\/campus-times\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/03\/painting-LIATI-sign.-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"painting LIATI sign.\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/>breaking Long Island Agricultural and Technical Institute &#8211; also known as LIATI &#8211; with the installation of a sign replicating the one that sat at the then-entrance to the campus at the spot near Orchard and Dewey Halls.<\/p>\n<p>The new wooden sign follows the look of the original, thanks to the efforts of Visual Communications Professor Bill Steedle, who did the hand-lettering,\u00a0 and Physical Plant&#8217;s Jack Petrich, project supervisor.
