Not bad for a commuter school.<\/p>\n<p>The event was an Island-wide success too, with nearly 7,000 Long Islanders going car-free or car-lite, using alternatives to driving alone such as car pooling, mass transit and bicycles. Car Free Day participants saved 134,000 miles of single-driver miles and 67 tons of CO2 emissions.<\/p>\n<p>There were more than 4,000 pledges at academic institutions across the Island, including Adelphi, Stony Brook, and Suffolk Community College.
