Bergman, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Henry Schein, Inc., and Leland D. Melvin, decorated former astronaut and longtime advocate of STEM education, will receive Honorary Doctor of Science degrees from SUNY at FSC&#8217;s\u00a0 May 20 commencement exercises.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10184\" style=\"width: 224px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10184\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-10184 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.farmingdale.edu\/sites\/campus-times\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/04\/Stanley-M.-Bergman.-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-10184\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stanley M. Bergman<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Mr. Bergman will speak at the 10 a.m. ceremony, and Mr. Melvin at 3 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe College is fortunate to have two outstanding recipients of honorary degrees,\u201d said Farmingdale State College President John S. Nader. \u201cMr. Bergman and Mr. Melvin are exemplary leaders in their respective fields. Their work should inspire our students to couple careers and service.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Bergman leads one of the world\u2019s largest providers of oral and health care products and services to office-based practitioners, with more than 21,000 employees, and operations and affiliates in 33 countries. Under his leadership, Henry Schein achieved an impressive sales record of $11.6 billion. <em>FORTUNE <\/em>magazine has named Henry Schein one of the World\u2019s Most Admired companies, and Henry Schein has been recognized by\u00a0 Ethisphere since 2012 as one of the World\u2019s Most Ethical Companies.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Bergman has also been a long-time supporter of Farmingdale State College\u2019s dental hygiene program. Farmingdale faculty have attended professional development workshops, students have completed internships at Henry Schein, and there are career opportunities for Farmingdale graduates. He has also ensured that the company is the biggest booster of Farmingdale\u2019s annual \u201cGive Kids a Smile\u201d day, providing all the supplies necessary for dental hygiene students to perform care on children of all ages. The Henry Schein Cares Foundation has also awarded, for the past two years, five scholarship opportunities to students enrolled in the hygiene program.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10185\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10185\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-10185 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.farmingdale.edu\/sites\/campus-times\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/04\/Leland-Melvin.-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-10185\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Leland Melvin<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Mr. Melvin began his distinguished career in 1989, when he joined NASA as an aerospace research engineer, and in 1998 he entered the astronaut corps, where he served as a mission specialist in two Atlantis space shuttle missions to the International Space Station.<\/p>\n<p>In 2010 he was named NASA\u2019s associate administrator for education, where he traveled the country inspiring interest among students and teachers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). In that role, he was the keynote speaker at Farmingdale\u2019s first STEM Diversity Summit in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>He retired from NASA in 2014, but continued to inspire those who most need to learn about STEM. He served on the White House National Science and Technology Council\u2019s Committee on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Education, which coordinates STEM activities and programs for all federal agencies, and encourages the teaching of innovation and entrepreneurship as part of STEM education.<\/p>\n<p>He was also the United States representative on the International Space Education Board, a global collaboration in space education between NASA and other space agencies around the world. For his work at NASA, and a lifetime of advocacy on behalf of STEM education, he holds 10 awards from the space agency and four honorary doctorates.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Melvin\u2019s book, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Chasing-Space-Astronauts-Second-Chances-ebook\/dp\/B01L6RD3SG\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1491927606&amp;sr=1-1&amp;refinements=p_27%3ALeland+Melvin\"><em>Chasing Space: An Astronaut&#8217;s Story of Grit, Grace, and Second Chances<\/em> <\/a><\/strong>(Amistad), will be published on May 23.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Chasing-Space-Astronauts-Second-Chances-ebook\/dp\/B01L6RD3SG\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1491927606&amp;sr=1-1&amp;refinements=p_27%3ALeland+Melvin\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Stanley M.
