School Supplies for Homeless Children
July 5, 2016
ASAP’s Lynn Elfe is coordinating a Supply our Students Backpack Drive. A box is set up outside the ASAP offices on the ground floor of Laffin.
The Supply Our Students Backpack Drive is hosted by the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH). Each year, thousands of backpacks are filled with school supplies collected through this drive. The backpacks are distributed through a network of homeless shelters in late August. Last summer, more than 3,000 backpacks were distributed to kids in need on Long Island. With your help, even more backpacks can be distributed this year.
Here’s a list of suggested donations: School Supply List LIHC.
All of those supplies are sorted and packed during the “Back Pack Pirates Summer Festival,” a one-day summer camp experience for up to 450 children from homeless shelters. In addition to an incredible camp experience and brand new backpacks, children are provided with new school clothing and shoes. Also collected are bathing suits and towels so kids attending the event can participate in water activities. Visit this website to watch the New 12 feature of Back Pack Pirates from 2015.
