FSC Professor Brings Tesla Expertise to Television

Dr. Bryan Field, assistant professor in the Physics Department, is an expert on Nikola Tesla: inventor, electrical engineer, mechanical engineer, and futurist who is best known for his contribution to the design of the modern alternating-current electricity supply system. Because of that, Dr. Field is going to appear on the PBS program, Drive by History.
Dr. Field was booked for the show when one of the program’s staff contacted Dr. Edmund Douglass, chair of the Science, Technology and Society Department. Dr. Douglass recommended Dr. Field, and after a telephone interview with Lee Brodie, the show’s producer, and Ken Magos, the host, Dr. Field was booked to appear on camera. The show will focus on the rivalry between Tesla and radio inventor Guglielmo Marconi. According to Dr. Field, Tesla also claimed to have invented radio.
“Nikola Tesla was an amazing and visionary engineer and inventor who played a huge roll in created many of the underlying aspects of the world in which we live today,” says Dr. Field. “He was never really forgotten by scientists or engineers, but the PBS audience is in for a treat when they learn about Tesla’s inventions and vision for our world.”
The segment was filmed at Wardenclyffe, a Long Island historical site and home of a Tesla laboratory.
