FSC’s Disability Services Center is sponsoring an Accessibility in Higher Education conference titled “Our Classrooms, Our Campuses, Our Community.” Faculty, professional staff, administrators, and students are invited to attend.

Admission to the event is $18 (includes breakfast); students may attend for free. If you wish to attend, register as soon as possible. Register here before the 10/21 deadline.

For more information, call 631-794-6174.

Guest speakers include Mitch Nagler, LMHC, director of the Bridges Program, who will address issues related to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). ASD is one of the fastest-growing cohorts of students with disabilities. Nagler will explore the characteristics of ASD students, their academic needs, and how we can best work together to support their academic success.

Also speaking are David J. Krieger, Senior Attorney, Office of Civil Rights, and Joy Purcell, Attorney, Office of Civil Rights. Complaints abound in every domain on today’s college campuses. Attorneys Krieger and Purcell will discuss OCR complaints common to college faculty, instruction, facilities, and student experiences.

Overall, the conference will cover compelling OCR cases impacting higher education in general, and more specifically, faculty, administration, student affairs, and physical plant. Among the topics included:

  • Interpreter services for deaf students seeking full access to campus life
  • Code of Conduct and behavior issues in the classroom, and around campus, for students with disabilities
  • Strategies for working with and teaching students with autism.
  • Inherent issues when faculty try to provide their own accommodations for students
  • Balancing technical standards and accommodating students with disabilities
