Bioeconomic Model of Externalities and Foreign Capital in Aquaculture Production

Associate Professor of Mathematics Worku Bitew will present “Bioeconomic Model of Externalities and Foreign Capital in Aquaculture Production” in this Department of Mathematics seminar.

All interested students and faculty are welcome.

The abstract of the talk is as follows: “We present a conceptual model for water-based system of aquaculture that accounts for (1) pollution and the interaction of markets for aquaculture and capture fisheries, and (2) foreign capital financing aquaculture production. We found that the Pigouvian tax that corrects for the negative externality must depend on economic and biological parameters in both fisheries. Furthermore, if aquaculture is financed by foreign capital, then the Pigouvian tax (optimum ad valorem tax) must equate the ratio of net to total benefit from the aquaculture. Numerical values are used to illustrate the results.”
