Each year, suicide affects millions of people. Nearly 800,000 people worldwide die of suicide and in the U.S. alone it is the 10th leading cause of death. And, for each suicide there are more than 20 suicide attempts. Suicide and suicide attempts create a devastating ripple effect that impacts families, friends, colleagues, communities, and societies. Many suicides may be preventable, 70% of people who die by suicide tell someone about it before it happens. Much can be done to prevent it at individual, community, and national levels.
