Dr. Michelle Miranda a Prolific Essayist

If nothing else, Dr. Michelle Miranda is a prolific writer.

Of course, Dr. Miranda is also a fine scholar, researcher, and top-flight professor in the Department of Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement Technology.

But as for prolific, she has just published three essays and a book chapter. The essays appear in Encyclopedia of Security and Emergency Management, and the chapter in The Best Murders Are British: Essays on the International Appeal of English Crime Dramas.

Read on for a closer look.

Health Security: Securing Borders, Managing COVID-19

This essay considers COVID-19 a national security concern. It evaluates the initial response and management of the pandemic in an effort to evaluate U.S. national preparedness, and encourage improved response to prevent future pandemic events.

Investigations: Cybercrimes

Three critical components of cybercrime investigations are explored: the physical (crime scene) investigation, digital (laboratory) investigation, and the role of the cybercrime/digital forensic investigator. It also considers scholarship in criminological and psychological approaches to understanding cybercrime.

Investigations: Firearms

Examined are the critical components of firearms investigations, including forensic firearms examinations, gunshot residue analysis, and shooting reconstructions.

Stumbling Around: The Art of Detection in the British Crime Series Endeavour

The chapter evaluates the analytical approach to investigations in the British crime drama, Endeavour, and demonstrates how these methods correspond to the transformation of policing in post-war Britain. It presents methods of detection; occasions of corruption and external influence on cases; and the overarching international appeal of the Endeavour series. Dr. Miranda demonstrates that while many British crime dramas focus on prevailing socio-political issues and enhanced character development, by juxtaposing a story arc focused on the lives and personal struggles of its main characters onto the underlying police procedural, hallmarks of detection and investigation remain intact.
