Esports Team Does FSC Proud in SUNY Tourney
June 1, 2020
To show you how far esports has come, last month SUNY Chancellor Kristina M. Johnson co-sponsored an esports tournament, to help support student emergency funds during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Co-sponsored by Extreme Networks, $20,000 in prize money was up for grabs, for winning teams to deposit in their own campus fund. Farmingdale State Esports club competed with Super Smash Bros. and Rocket League teams, beating six other campuses to make it to the quarterfinals.
“This is no small feat for a club that is just breaking into the competitive esports scene,” says Allen Figeroux, outgoing club president. “Every tournament we participate in helps our teams improve and grow. Next SUNY tournament we plan on taking the gold.”
Sean Caliendo, member of Super Smash Bros., appreciated the experience for its significance.
“It was a fun to participate in, and it was cool to see SUNY schools come together for something positive in these rough times.”
Jason Gant, Director of Campus Recreation, also sees the bigger picture.
“During these unprecedented times, the success of the Esports club can be a shining light to show the strength of our College and its students. That said, it feels extra special to perform well when competing against our fellow SUNY schools.”
Incoming club president, Shane Gordon, has broad plans for Farmingdale State Esports, not only improving its teams but growing its players.
“My vision for the Esports club is to help each member grow, not only in skill with their respective games, but also as people. I firmly believe that Farmingdale Esports will be a lead competitor on the collegiate esports stage. I want to help expand our community throughout the campus. Farmingdale Esports is here to win!”
