Sustainable Garden Workshops Teach Skills to Take Home
February 10, 2020
Want to learn practical horticultural and design skills to incorporate into your home landscape? How about connecting with other garden enthusiasts? You can do all this, and prepare for the upcoming growing season, at three workshops sponsored by FSC’s Department of Urban Horticulture & Design.
The first workshop – Growing Your Own Food: A Primer for Success – is scheduled for Saturday, 2/15, from 10 a.m. – noon, at the Horticulture Greenhouse. The workshop will introduce the essential nuts and bolts to create a garden designed to produce food that is healthy, fresh, affordable, and beautiful. You will also learn about site selection for your garden, proper soil husbandry, seed-starting techniques, sourcing plants, and designing a schedule to keep the harvest going all year. A particular focus will be utilizing practices and techniques that care for the environment, and those who want to grow, harvest, and eat fresh, healthy produce.
Horticulture Professor Michael Veracka will conduct the workshop. His teaching interests and design practice focus on sustainable design, edible landscaping, and the adaptive reuse of urban spaces.
Pre-registration is required. Contact Professor Veracka; 934-420-2392. Admission fees are $10 for Sustainable Garden members, and $15 for non-members. FSC students may attend for free. Meet at the Horticulture department greenhouse.
Upcoming workshops include Fruit Growing for the Home Landscape (2/29) and Introduction to Permaculture (3/7).
