Greenley Library Unveils New Writing, Tutoring, and Distance Learning Spaces
January 31, 2020
Last week’s ribbon cutting at Greenley Library was a groundbreaking event, attended by President Nader, library director Karen Gelles, members of the administration, and faculty, staff, and students. The ceremony celebrated the new Distance Learning Suite on the second floor, and Learning Loft on the third floor. The Loft houses the new Tutoring Center and Writing Center.
“When we first started thinking about Greenley as an Information Commons over a decade ago, none of us could have visualized that our monolithic circa 1970s orange and brown library could have been transformed into a space like this,” says Gelles. “When the Tutoring and Writing Centers moved here in Fall 2015, we knew right away that students would benefit from having these services co-located here. Since then, the AAIC, RAM Program, and Nexus Center have joined the Information Commons, making it a primary hub for student support services.”
The Tutoring Center provides a variety of free services to FSC students. They include walk-in tutoring for select courses in which students are currently enrolled. Last year, the Tutoring Center held more 2,600 tutoring sessions for nearly 800 students. This spring, 30 tutors will be on hand.
The Writing Center provides professional writing specialists to guide students through the writing process, from conception to completion of course papers. With 28 new computers and three new large projection screens, class workshops are easily accommodated at the Writing Center.
Distance Learning provides support for online and hybrid programs. Last year, 124 online and hybrid courses were added, along with new teaching and learning technologies, such as LinkedIn Learning and Voicethread. A support administrator and instructional designer have been added to the staff.
