Ram-bo Canned!
December 9, 2019
Nearly 40 students from FSC’s Architecture and Construction Management program recently participated in Canstruction Long Island, an annual fundraiser where teams compete by making giant structures out of canned food. The team’s goal was to build a Ram-bo statue.
The students worked with 3,792 cans, acquired by Instructional Support Technician Daniel Palo, and students Jorge Restrepo and Mohammed Omar, with funds donated by the Gelina & McClees Fund. Department professors Eugene Kwak, Dr. Michael Shenoda, and department chair Professor Orla LoPiccolo helped too, assisting with the practice round, formal construction, and “decanstruction”; i.e. disassembling Ram-bo.
“A big thank you to our dedicated students and faculty who helped me make this project possible,” says Professor LoPiccolo. “They enjoyed the experience and learned about building a structure out of cans and teamwork skills.”
Cans are donated to the Interfaith Nutrition Network, Island Harvest Food Bank, Long Island Cares/Harry Chapin Food Bank, and The NEST at Nassau Community College, for distribution to food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, group homes, day-treatment facilities, senior-nutrition sites, and daycare centers on Long Island.
“Driven by the knowledge that their structures will change lives by lifting the spirits of those in need, by raising public awareness, and most importantly, by filling the shelves of local food banks, dedicated volunteers work tirelessly to bring their creations to life,” says Canstruction Long Island.
The winner was selected by visitors to RXR Plaza, in Uniondale, who voted with a donated can of food.
