Celebrating Walt Whitman
In honor of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Walt Whitman, scholar and author Dr. Karen Karbiener will speak about the poet, his poetry, his perhaps unexpected connection to Farmingdale, and her new book, Live Oak, with Moss.
The book is a new edition of Whitman’s same-sex love poems — the poet’s “private reflections on his attraction to and affection for other men, which were not published during his lifetime and remained mostly unknown to the general public” says Dr. Karbiener.
After the presentation, Dr. Karbiener will sign her books. The event is free, but RSVPs are requested to ensure adequate seating. You may also RSVP to Ann Rodenburg, 516-249-0093, ext. 204.
Dr. Karbiener is a Whitman scholar and teaches at NYU. Winner of the Kluge Fellowship at the Library of Congress and a Fulbright recipient, she has published widely on Whitman, including an edition of Leaves of Grass, two audiobooks on Whitman’s life and influence, a book introducing Whitman’s poetry to children, and a collaboration with illustrator Brian Selznick on Live Oak, with Moss.
The event is sponsored by the Cultural Arts Committee of the Village of Farmingdale. It sponsors artistic, cultural, historical, and literary events, on the Village Green and at Village Hall.
