Georgetown University Study Ranks FSC High in Net Present Value
November 18, 2019
This year, FSC’s high rankings in college polls and research studies came as no surprise. And it has happened again.
Researchers at the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce recently addressed the question of value for the money, using newly released federal data to try to calculate return on investment for 4,500 U.S. colleges and universities. FSC placed in the top seven percent for the period covering 15 to 40 years. Again, no surprise there, given the College’s outstanding academic programs and affordable tuition.
“FSC is a clear leader in both college affordability and in generating excellent educational outcomes,” says President Nader. “The Georgetown study is further evidence of the value of a Farmingdale degree, and the great work our faculty does in preparing students for vibrant careers.”
The study mainly focuses on Net Present Value (NPV): how much a sum of money in the future is valued today. This metric includes costs, future earnings, and the length of time it would take to invest and earn a certain amount of money over a fixed horizon. FSC’s NPV numbers are impressive.
The 10-year NPV is $153,000; $357,000 after 15 years; $541,000 after 20 (which places FSC in the top 14% in NYS); $860,000 at the 30-year mark; and topping out at $1,112,000 at 40 years. FSC places slightly lower than Stony Brook and higher than Old Westbury.
Earlier this year, a Forbes “Best Value Colleges” poll placed Farmingdale State College in the top 24% of the nearly 700 colleges and universities reviewed. Only 300 schools were actually ranked. Public and private colleges and universities offering four-year degrees, in all 50 states, were evaluated. CollegeFactual.com, in its “Best Colleges for the Money” category, in New York State FSC ranked in the Top 20 out of 115 schools. Washington Monthly ranked FSC in the top one-third of 386 baccalaureate-granting colleges in the Northeast for “Best Bang for the Buck.”
