Dr. Eleanor Fapohunda Colloquium Series Features Dr. Timothy Nicholson
Join Dr. Timothy Nicholson at the next Dr. Eleanor Fapohunda Colloquium Series event, “East African Students in the United Kingdom in the 1960s.” Dr. Nicholson is assistant professor in the Department of History, Politics and Geography.
Says Dr. Nicholson about his presentation: “Highlight the complex trans-nationality of East African youth as they circumvented colonial travel regulations, only to experience alienation by the Indian public who, as the hosts in new transnational zones of contact, mimicked colonial anxieties and fears of African intimacy. African students were welcomed by the government, as they wanted to promote strong postcolonial relations, but condemned the local population who did not welcome such camaraderie, especially in shared areas such as restaurants, apartments, and especially the bedroom. Despite some positive interactions in the schoolroom, host societies around the world largely viewed intimate encounters as problematic and in need of policing.
“This paper utilizes oral histories of three students as a means to counter the scarcity of documents and fragmentary records. By demonstrating the multifaceted dimensions associated with the emerging ties between East Africa and the United Kingdom as an epilogue to colonial rule, this talk rethinks development of the intimate forms of racism.”
