Excellence in Professional Service
Darleyne E. Mayers, Associate Director of Student and Community Engagement, LIEOC
FSC welcomed Ms. Mayers in 1991, and since that time she has served LIEOC in many roles. She considers her chief role as that of mentor to students, and feels that the work she does for LIEOC is a privilege. Dr. Elsa Sofia Morote, LIEOC’s executive director, called Ms. Mayers “a consummate professional.” She has also been praised for her work in the community, most notably by New York State Controller Thomas DiNapoli: “I have known Darleyne since I was in the State Assembly, and I have long been impressed by how tirelessly and effectively she puts her professional skills to work in the service of the community.”
Lauren Romer, Associate Registrar, Registrar’s Office
Ms. Romer began her FSC career in 2013 as assistant registrar. The Selection Committee said of her: “Ms. Romer has an eye for detail, is prompt in meeting deadlines, is creative and professional with all constituents she services, and this makes her an exceptional associate registrar.” The Committee went on to say: “In an office filled with hardworking and dedicated individuals, Lauren’s clear-headed organization, coupled with a wonderful sense of humor, prove time and time again to be a true asset to the Office of the Registrar.” Outside the office, she has served on the Distance Learning and Commencement committees.
Cynthia F. Thomas, Instructional Support Specialist, Biology Department
A Farmingdale alumna, Ms. Thomas began work at the College in 1978, as a laboratory technician. Her department chair, Dr. Sarah Gross, commented: “Cindy is truly an integral part of the entire Farmingdale State College community. I can think of no one more deserving of the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service than Cynthia Thomas.” In her own words, Ms. Thomas said: “From day one on the job, it has been my goal to give every student who comes through my classes the same positive and rewarding experience that I had, so that they too could feel that they got an exceptional education.”

Officer Luis Llano, University Police
Officer Llano may be best known as the face of University Police on campus. He organized bike-patrols; conducts foot patrols in the residence halls; and developed the Rape Awareness and Defense training. He regularly spends time with parents of incoming students, explaining to them that UP exists to serve their children. Said Lt. Michael McCrann, Supervising University Police Officer, who nominated Officer Llano for the award: “It has been Luis’s friendly and outgoing personality that has been his biggest contribution to the campus. He knows more students by their first names than the average professor.”
