Professors, Students Visit Iceland
May 20, 2019
Dr. Clare Forstie, Department of Sociology and Anthropology, and Professor Eileen Breslin, School of Business, led a group of 15 students on a 10-day trip to Iceland over spring break, visiting four cities, including Reykjavik, Vik, Hella and Borgarnes.
The visit included guided tours, cultural excursions, class time, museum tours, and more.
Said Dr. Forstie: “Research has shown that study abroad programs benefit students, and there are also numerous benefits for faculty, especially as we think about how best to approach learning. My pedagogical skills have been strengthened, and my own perspectives about teaching, learning, and students’ experiences were significantly affected throughout our travel. I learned about Icelandic cultures right along with my students, and their experiences have informed how I think and teach from a more global perspective.”
Criminal Justice-Law Enforcement Technology major Maria Simonetti ’20 added: “Immersing myself in the ‘exotic North’ was a wonderful Study Abroad experience. Farmingdale State College faculty led us throughout Reykjavik and South Iceland, including dramatic landscapes of geysers, volcanoes, hot springs, an underground lava hike and glacier walk, to name a few! Studying multiculturalism and ethnography helped us to do our course work, and truly observe the Nordic culture. This was my second opportunity to study abroad and as I figured, it would be as life-changing as the last one.”
