Horticulture Professor Volunteering at PGA Championship
April 30, 2019
Next month, when Tiger Woods and a bevy of other golfers walk the Bethpage Black golf course for the 101st PGA Championship, chances are they will step where Urban Horticulture and Design assistant professor, Dr. Nick Menchyk, has done his handiwork. Menchyk has volunteered to do maintenance for the tournament.
This won’t be the first time Dr. Menchyk has worked a tournament at Bethpage.
“This marks the second time I’ve volunteered at Bethpage, with my other experience being the Barclays Tournament in 2016,” said Dr. Menchyk.” My duties will vary throughout the week and can range from mowing turf grass to raking bunkers, and anything in between.”
This will be the first PGA Championship contested at Bethpage State Park, and the first time it has been on Long Island since 1939. The 2019 event at Bethpage Black will mark the 13th time a New York venue has hosted the PGA Championship, the most of any state. The Black Course at Bethpage is ranked #38 on Golf Digest’s America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses and #8 in their Greatest Public Course rankings.
