Giving Garden an FSC – Island Harvest Partnership
The campus community is invited to the ribbon cutting for the Giving Garden, a 50′ x 100′ parcel of land in the Fred Harrison Service Complex that Island Harvest will use to grow vegetables for food insecure Long Islanders. The ribbon cutting takes place Tuesday, 4/23, at 1 p.m.
Under the the supervision of Island Harvest Food Bank’s certified organic gardeners, FSC faculty, staff, and student volunteers will cultivate crops that will include tomatoes, beets, garlic, squash, herbs and other vegetables. More than 3,500 pounds of produce is expected to be grown and distributed to local food pantries, soups kitchens, and other feeding programs serviced by Island Harvest Food Bank.
Much of this food will end up on the tables of needy families in Nassau and Suffolk, where it is estimated that more than 76,000 children go to bed hungry or without a nutritious meal.
“Partnering with Island Harvest Food Bank aligns perfectly with our core values of community service and sustainability,” said Farmingdale State College President John Nader. “Establishing the Giving Garden during the year we celebrate our Centennial Commencement underscores the College’s rich heritage.”
“Growing nutritionally rich, fresh fruits and vegetables in gardens like here in Farmingdale, are vital to providing long-term, sustainable food security for the people we serve, and we’re pleased to partner with Farmingdale State College on this important initiative,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president & CEO, Island Harvest Food Bank. Shubin Dresner is also a member of FSC’s College Council.
