FSC Club Teams with Habitat for Humanity
April 22, 2019
Architecture and Construction Management student Daniel Palo was looking for something for the Architectural Construction Technology club (ACT) to do that would give them both hands-on experience outside the classroom and a chance to give back to the community in a way that enhanced people’s lives. He found the perfect partner to fulfill his dream in Habitat for Humanity.
“This educational experience allowed us the means to positively impact the community by donating our time and labor to help make affordable housing available for a single mother and her family,” Palo said proudly. “It involved 15 students volunteering to literally build a home that in turn benefited a person in need.”
Palo is treasurer of ACT, which first had to overcome a funding hurdle. Professor Orla Smyth LoPiccolo, chair of the Department of Architecture and Construction Management, found the necessary support from the Office of Development and Alumni Engagement, which administers the Farmingdale College Foundation. Palo and company then grabbed their tools and headed to East Patchogue. The project included sheathing of first-floor framing, layout and construction of interior wall frames, and more.
ACT member Mary Villanueva said: “Habitat for Humanity was a great opportunity for aspiring architecture and construction management students like me and my colleagues to help and contribute in our community, while learning and getting hands on experience of the real world.”
Daniella Lima Smyth was particularly appreciative of the opportunity to do unto others.
“Volunteering increases my self-confidence. I am doing good for others, which produces a natural sense of accomplishment. Furthermore, it helps my mental and physical health along the way in college. It makes me happier. As a volunteer in Habitat for Humanity, I have a great way to begin new friendships and build professional relationships.”
ACT will be teaming with Habitat for Humanity again this fall.
