FSC Kicks Off Campaign to Fund New Academic Building
March 11, 2019
To paraphrase Mark Antony’s speech about Julius Caesar in the William Shakespeare play of the same name, “We have come here to praise Farmingdale State College… ”
The “we” in FSC’s case was an all-star cast of NYS senators and assembly members who came to campus last week to rally around the college’s plan to build an Applied Sciences building. The price tag: $53 million, which is why FSC needs allies in Albany.
The aforementioned praise was effusive:
- Senator John Brooks (an FSC alum): “Farmingdale is one of Long Island’s best success stories. We have to build on that success.”
- Assembly Member Kimberly Jean-Pierre: “Farmingdale State College is a hub for keeping young people on Long Island. We need you on Long Island.”
- Assembly Member Steve Stern: “Farmingdale is critically important to the Long Island region.”
- Senator Kevin Thomas: “We need to invest in Long Island and keep our young people on Long Island.”
- John Durso, president, LI Federation of Labor; AFL-CIO: “We can all celebrate what this school has meant to Long Island.”
President Nader, who like the others stressed the importance of keeping Long Island’s young people local, made the case for the building before a full room and four TV news crews. He commented on FSC’s phenomenal growth over the last dozen years (47% between 2006 – 2016); the need for adding capacity so that up to 1,000 new students could be enrolled; and the College’s amazing track record for training students to find jobs within six months of graduation.
Building features include high-tech lecture-style classrooms, including “Smartboards;” audio-visual capabilities; collaborative learning design; student lounges; and faculty offices.
