Tribute to Physics Professor Emeritus Paul Kramer
December 10, 2018
Farmingdale State College announces the death of one of its most distinguished former faculty members, Dr. Paul Kramer of the Department of Physics. Dr. Kramer died on November 28 of an apparent heart attack. He had just passed his 83rd birthday, and he leaves behind his wife, Dr. Rosalind Hopmeier Kramer, and his daughters, Rachel Green and Sharon Joy Lite, and their families.
Dr. Kramer served as a member of the faculty from 1969 to 2010. He was Dean of Student Services in the early eighties, and chaired the Department of Physics from 1977 to 1981. Dr. Kramer was far ahead of his time in many respects. He was perhaps the first on campus to denounce smoking, and he was an ardent fan of Apple computers long before they were popular. He was an active supporter of academic computing, with leadership positions in the Student Computing Access Program, and the Faculty Access to Computing Technology committee.
Dr. Kramer most recently served as the first Coordinator of the PreHealth Program at Farmingdale. He was also a major contributor to the Writing in the Disciplines program. Perhaps this quote from one of his engineering students (addressed to him long after graduation) best reflects Dr. Kramer’s contributions to us all:
“…I’d have to say that I was well prepared, thanks to you and G. Nelson. Without your inspiration I would have never discovered my love of physics.”
Anyone wishing to contact Dr. Kramer’s family may email his daughter, Rachel, at rachelzoegreen@gmail.com.
