Professor Asks: Do We Need the LGBTQ Community?
Thursday, September 27, 2018 10:50am - 12:05pm Great Room, Ward Hall
Past Event
In an era of marriage equality and increasing visibility for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people, is the LGBTQ community still a necessity? To answer this question, Dr. Clare Forstie will discuss results from her research with LGBTQ people and allies in a small Midwestern city, where drag shows are popular but gay bars have closed in recent years. Although the rural Midwest may seem “hostile” to LGBTQ people, participants explained they felt “safe,” but unable to find a sense of community and friendship in their small city. Results suggest some similarities between LGBTQ communities in the rural Midwest and Long Island, and Dr. Forstie will challenge assumptions about acceptance and safety in seemingly inclusive spaces.
The lecture is the first event in the fall semester Dr. Eleanor Fapohunda School of Arts & Science Colloquium Series. For more information, contact Elizanne Warren-Russell; 631-420-2467.
