FSC Receives $790K from NYS for Clean Energy Workforce Training
September 11, 2018
In the summer of 2017, Professor Marj Issapour wrote a grant proposal for funding from NYS to create a non-credit workforce training program in the fields of renewable and clean energy, within the Renewable Energy and Sustainability Center. And then she waited. Twelve months to be exact.
Now FSC has reaped the fruit of her labor, with a $790,000 grant from the state to fund the program. It was the largest amount awarded to a SUNY school.
The grant was announced at FSC last week, by Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul, who was joined by SUNY Chancellor Kristina Johnson.
“Funding for clean energy and workforce development programs at SUNY campuses across the state will help promote environmental protection,” the Lieutenant Governor said. “These training programs will continue to support the industry and prepare individuals for jobs of the future.”
Chancellor Johnson added: “SUNY is proud to provide high-quality, hands-on, and the most up-to-date clean energy education and training to our students, building a diverse, preeminent talent pipeline for today and tomorrow’s clean energy industry in New York State.”
“We will partner with Long Island industry to create specialized programs to train individuals to be employment-ready in energy and environment jobs,” Professor Issapour said. She added that she hopes some of the workforce trainees will enroll at FSC and earn degrees in the field.
