Parkland, FL Hero – and FSC Alumnus – Honored with ESPY Award

By all accounts, Scott Beigel was a dedicated teacher, outstanding coach, and an excellent role model. But those descriptions don’t begin to compare with the one that will follow him eternally.

Hero.

Beigel ’07 earned an associate degree at FSC. A native of Dix Hills, he was killed in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, FL in February, when he opened his classroom door and began to lead stranded students to safety. Among the many observances of his tragic, heroic death was a Best Coach Award given posthumously to three Parkland coaches, including Beigel, at the annual ESPY gala presented recently by the ESPN network. Beigel, who taught geography and coached cross country, helped students enter a locked classroom when the shooting began. Watch the video of the ESPY Awards presentations.
