Dr. Monica Diamond-Caravella Studying the Benefits of Children’s Asthma Program
May 30, 2018
Nursing professor Dr. Monica Diamond-Caravella’s doctoral work on a public school-based asthma-management program for 8 – 11 year olds is bearing fruit and drawing attention from local, state and national health agencies.
“The explicit purpose of my study was to determine the effectiveness of “Open Airways for Schools” (OAS) in improving asthma self-management and self-knowledge skills in public elementary school children residing in high-needs communities, receiving instruction by trained nursing student OAS facilitators within a multi-site academic-practice partnership,” said Dr. Diamond-Caravella.
According to Dr. Diamond-Caravella, the program – steeped in years of research – has been proven effective once again, but now in suburban rather than urban high-needs communities. Now, her research is receiving wide attention, with the American Lung Association, New York State Department of Health, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showing interest in her findings.
In addition, she has presented her research to the New York State Department of Health and Asthma Coalition of Long Island. On 6/9, she will present at the 40th Annual Institute of the Association for Community Health Nurse Educators, and, on 7/18, participate in a New York State Public Health Association webinar series.
