Janice Rivera Named to SUNY’s Hispanic Leadership Institute
March 26, 2018
Janice Rivera, Executive Director of the Department of Academic Support and Access Programs, has been named a fellow in the inaugural class of SUNY’s Hispanic Leadership Institute. She is one of only 12 leaders, from nine SUNY institutions, to be selected.
The Institute is charged with developing and supporting the next generation of executive-level Hispanic/LatinX leaders across the SUNY system.
“In New York, we know that diversity is our greatest asset and this groundbreaking program will ensure that the leadership at SUNY will reflect the strength of New York’s diverse communities,” Governor Andrew M. Cuomo said. “This fellowship will give New York’s future leaders the tools and training necessary to succeed and lead the SUNY system.”
“I am especially excited and honored to be a member of the inaugural class,” said Rivera. “As a Latina of Puerto Rican descent, my culture has greatly influenced who I am as a professional, educator, mother, and member of my communities.
“I have devoted my career to working with, and supporting underrepresented students. I fully embrace my history as one of them, and recognize that I am currently a proud member of an underrepresented, but growing population of Latino/a leaders who have much to offer within the SUNY system and the field of higher education.”
Over the course of the program, fellows will participate in individualized mentoring, assessment, and development programs to support their success. The SUNY HLI will also work with the SUNY Chief Diversity Officer to help ensure that search committees are trained to successfully recruit top Hispanic candidates to leadership positions within the university system.
