One Professor’s Love of Museums Leads to Coast-to-Coast Exposure

On TV station websites from Memphis to San Diego, and Cleveland to Honolulu, little did FSC Professor Bentley Whitfield know that when he began writing articles about small American museums that he would have his work published from coast to coast – and on Guam.

It’s not a stretch that a member of the English/Humanities faculty would have a fascination with small museums, but what’s surprising is that big- and small-market affiliates of TV networks including Fox, NBC, CBS and ABC – 24 in all – would be interested in his hobby. An avid race walker, it began when Professor Whitfield began visiting museums in cities where he went to run in 10Ks and half-marathons.

“I have a huge appreciation for museums,” he said. “While traveling to compete I began to visit small museums.  Over time I began to focus on smaller museums as a subject to study and write about.”

Read Professor Whitfield’s article about the homes of artifacts and artwork, published by NBC5, in New Orleans, LA.
