September 11, 2017
The Farmingdale College Foundation has received a $75,000 donation from the Tortora Sillcox Family Foundation, to create the Sillcox Scholars Program here at Farmingdale State College.
Established in 2008, the Sillcox Scholars Program provides college advisement and “unmet needs” financial support to select Hempstead High School graduates. Sillcox Scholars are selected based upon their character, leadership and focus on accomplishing academic goals. To date, 175 Sillcox Scholars have been inducted into the program and have accomplished an 89% college graduation rate and a 92% retention rate. Seventy-one percent of the Sillcox Scholars graduate college with a 3.0 GPA or higher. Sillcox Scholars are also attending Nassau Community College, Queens College, Stony Brook University, Baruch College, and other CUNY and SUNY institutions.
With an increasing number of students expressing interest in STEM careers offered by Farmingdale, the Sillcox Scholars Program and the College have entered into an agreement to establish the Sillcox Scholar Program at Farmingdale beginning this semester.
“We are excited for our students to have this opportunity to pursue their college education at an institution that provides STEM majors, while also emphasizing internships and career focus,” says Mark Sillcox, Trustee, Tortora Sillcox Family Foundation.
