FSC Star Pitcher Drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates
June 26, 2017
Matt Seelinger ’17, star pitcher for the FSC Rams baseball team this past season, made school history recently by becoming the first player ever selected in the Major League Baseball draft. Seelinger was tabbed by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 28th round.
Over his career, Seelinger was named All-Conference and All-Region twice and in 2016 was the Skyline Pitcher of the Year.
This past season, he posted a 4-1 record with a 1.39 ERA. He led the team in innings pitched (51.2), strikeouts (69), and opponents batting average (.159). He led the conference in strikeouts and opponents’ batting average and ranked 4th in the nation in hits allowed per nine innings (4.88), 6th in WHIP (0.85), 9th in earned run average and 16th for strikeouts per nine innings (12.02).
Seelinger graduated from FSC as the all-time leader in strikeouts per nine innings, ranked 2nd for total strikeouts, 3rd in opponents batting average, and 5th in both innings pitched and wins.
Coincidentally, FSC head baseball coach Keith Osik was also drafted by Pittsburgh, in 1990, and played seven seasons for the Pirates.
