7 New Chancellor’s Award Winners Brings Total to 265

We’ve been talking about student, faculty and staff Chancellor’s Award winners for months now, and we’re not done yet. Here are four of the latest to be honored by SUNY. Three other winners – Sylvia E. Navarro Nicosia, Dr. Susan Barrett-Landau, and Keri Hauff – will be featured in the next Campus Times.
CHANCELLOR’S AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING
Dr. Sarah Gross
Dr. Sarah Gross, Biology
Since joining Farmingdale in 2006, Dr. Gross has made significant and substantial changes to the Bioscience curriculum. She has advised hundreds of students and serves as curriculum director for Bioscience. Her ability to translate her research activity has benefited our students. She is described as a master teacher who spends hours advising students applying to graduate and professional schools.
Professor Janet Gruber
Janet Gruber, Dental Hygiene
An alumna of FSC, Professor Gruber has been a member of the full-time faculty since 2001. She teaches Radiology – one of Dental Hygiene’s most difficult courses – and it is notable that since 2001, FSC students consistently reflect scores for radiology well above the national average. Professor Gruber has authored chapters in three editions of one of the most highly regarded textbooks in Dental Hygiene. She has served as co-advisor for the Student American Dental Hygienist’s Association since 2001, offering events such as Give a Marine/Veteran a Smile. She has twice been recognized as Advisor of the Year.
Dr. Arthur Hoskey
Dr. Arthur Hoskey, Computer Systems
A member of the campus community since 2008, Dr. Hoskey teaches courses primarily at the upper level. When he arrived, he quickly wrote new courses, which he taught. He creates a student-centered learning environment which fosters creativity, critical thinking and a deep understanding of the subject matter. Students and colleagues give him high marks for his teaching. One student remarked that he must get only one hour’s sleep a night because he spends so much time helping.
He has presented at technology conferences and served as Co-PI on a $10,000 grant.
CHANCELLOR’S AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN SCHOLARSHIP & CREATIVE ACTIVITIES
Professor Thomas Germano
Thomas Germano, Visual Communications Professor Germano has taught in the department since 1997. He is an outstanding teacher and much sought-after lecturer. He is a practicing artist whose work has been widely recognized, and he brings that sensibility and knowledge to his classes. He has received two National Endowment for the Humanities fellowships. His research led to the creation of an art history course on Meso-American art which has become part of an interdisciplinary minor in Latin American Studies. He has led 18 European study-abroad courses, which has opened our students’ eyes to different cultures and approaches to art. He is generous with his time and
appreciated by his students, who sing his praises.
